Indigo Girls at The Greek Theater in LA.

Last week on the Katie Herzig tour, we got to stop by VH1 and perform on Nick Lachey’s (and Jim Shearer’s :) ) Morning Buzz show. I learned a few things including Times Square at 5am is surprisingly dreamy.

Here’s a fun little video from one of our shows in Germany on the Vienna Teng tour. It’s a rare treat for me to get to play the French Horn outside the studio these days. I’m so grateful to be playing with such musical ninjas who also let me indulge my inner orchestra nerd. Now, if we could fit a marimba in the cargo hold for Alex, we’d really be cool.

Here’s a video of my amigos and I performing Andrew Belle’s new single “Pieces” from his wondermous new record, “Black Bear”. It’s been so much fun playing these songs live.  I hope you enjoy very close shots of my hands as much as I do. Enjoy!

There's a Last Time for Everything by Lucy Wainwright Roche

A little while ago, my dear friend Lucy and I holed up in my studio and made a record together.  It felt like a special moment and I’m elated that it is now out and available to the world.

It’s called “There’s A Last Time for Everything” and features some fun guest vocalists (Colin Melon of the Decemberists, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Robby Hecht), but Lucy is the gem on the record.  I went into the project thinking she was talented and quickly learned I didn’t know the half of it.

I hope you guys like it.

On Feb.14, 2013, Sandra McCracken released her 8th studio record,                                 "Desire Like Dynamite"

(Which made the top 50 on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart this month!!)

I must confess I find some difficulty in writing about what has become my new favorite record in the career of one of my favorite songwriters…and people.  I say this not to be overly superlative as much as let you know what I’m up against mentally.

I had the honor of co-producing the record with Sandra and Derek as well as doing the artwork.  Derek is another deeply gifted mind in that family. (it’s like *Talent Hoarding over there, right? Save some for the rest of us!? geez.) [*Talent Hoarding is a trade mark of a show I’m developing with the LIfetime Channel, so don’t even think about stealing it.]

From the first demos Sandra sent me, I knew she was starting to make a rare record; One that feels like a workout for my heart….which in the course of listening to these songs expands, then caves in on itself, then grow three sizes. (Yes, like the Grinch.)

With a masterful handle on the abstract, Sandra’s writing seems to capture at once a hidden moment that feels like walking past an open door, and simultaneously capture a widened view of the world that suddenly seems larger than you remember. Covering everything from ecological conservation, motherhood, the power of desire,  what it means to believe, and everything in between, it appeals to an elusive truth we often find in the abstract…one that somehow feels more true than literal description.

I love it. every time.

PS.  I recommend the Physical CD + Digital Bonus Bundle package because those videos are gems and who wants that cover in a digital square? nobody. Hold it in your hands like a real human!

As I write this, I am currently 3/4 of the way through a 36 hour travel day home to Nashville after a month in Australia and New Zealand. I crossed the ocean to play guitar on a run of shows with Missy Higgins. I won’t go on and on about what a delight my time there was, but I’ll say if I got back to Nashville tomorrow and they told me I had to another 36 hour travel day back next week, I’d be on the first flight out. Namaste, y’aaaall.

This year I got the opportunity to co-produce (and do the artwork for) the record of one of my favorite singers and songwriters…who also happens to be my dearest friend.  Sandra set the bar pretty high on this one and I’m SO looking forward to having it out in the world.
